 制片公司Media Rights Capital继电影《黑暗塔 The Dark Tower》后再次与Stephen King联手，他们将把后者畅销小说《局外人 The Outsider》开发成10集HBO超自然题材剧，而电视台现在宣布会在20年1月12日作两集首播。 带有超自然元素的《局外人》由Richard Price编剧﹑Jason Bateman执导头两集，剧中讲述密西根州弗林特里，主角Terry Maitland（Jason Bateman饰）是个最具传奇色彩的人物，身兼少年棒球联盟的教练﹑英语教师﹑丈夫及两个女儿的父亲的Terry在公众面前被捕，他被指控以诡异方式谋杀了11岁的Frankie Peterson。但是奇怪的事来了：Terry有着铁一般的不在场证明，因为他当时在一个会议上并且多的是目击者，但同时案发现场又发现了Terry的的DNA及指纹。 Ben Mendelsohn饰演调查主角的警探Ralph Anderson，Cynthia Erivo饰演非传统的私家侦探Holly Gibney（此角与《梅塞德斯先生 Mr. Mercedes》的Holly是同一人，不过两剧并没关系），而其他主演包括Bill Camp﹑Mare Winningham﹑Paddy Considine﹑Julianne Nicholson﹑Yul Vázquez﹑Jeremy Bobb及Marc Menchaca。
